How's My Driving: Player (And Game) Edition!

Happy St. Patrick's Day to those who celebrate! Remember: don't drink and how's my drive.

This is a combined player and game HMD, which means your mods are going to be begging for feedback. We're feeling a little disconnect and want to make sure everyone is enjoying themselves as much as possible. Specifically we're looking for feedback on the Haunted Holo plot, and what we can do in the future to make such large-scale plots more accessible.

It's also an HMD for our characters! Please comment here with the names of the characters you play and others will reply with their feedback- and it's obviously a given that this feedback will be helpful, constructive and respectful. Also, as amazing as getting ILU comments is, it's nice to hear why and what we're doing right just as much as criticism needs to be constructive. Participation is also entirely optional, and if you have any issues just let a mod know and we'll help out as much as we can.

Anonymous commenting is enabled and IP logging is off for your convenience should you require it!

I said this on plurk but I'm moving it over here too because it's important:

We're really, really anxious about what we're feeling is a communication breakdown, guys. So please, if you've had any thoughts of what we could have done better with anything, or any little negative grumblings, tell us. This isn't us asking for asspats, this is us asking you where you want the game to go.

idk if we should all get plurks or try a group chat going on again or not, but I haven't seen our new players! Or really really met them very much ):

I agree with the group chats thing -- it'd be nice to do that!

I'm down with group chatting, but plurk... Yeah. I'm not really so down with plurk.

+1, I like group chats, they make things feel a lot more like a 'community' imo. Of course time zones and schedules will be a bitch but... yes

I love this game. I've been here from the very beginning and through many changes and I still love it. I think you have done and are continuing to do a great job.

I really enjoyed / am really enjoying the Haunted Holo plot. Things have progressed slowly, yes, but that's just the way that Taxon is. We're a laidback game and we thrive on backtags and backdating. I'm worried that you might be mistaking a slow response for a lack of interest?

And Keri uses the totally wrong account but whatevs *goes with it*

I think what sort of got to us was how nothing really got rolling until right around/after we'd originally said the plot was going to be ending. Like there's slow and laid back and then there's this feeling of "oh right maybe something should be done with this". I was musing on plurk about how I fundamentally don't understand how bigger games (or really any game) can get through massive upheaval plots in a few days while we set out week-long timeframes for folks to jump in and every single time end up extending it anyway.

Then I figured out that it's because we're so small, and if two, three, four people are dealing with RL stuff/burnout/things at other games the impact here can get disproportionately massive. And now I'm trying to balance my knee-jerk "love us, damnit" reaction with the rational fact that everyone CAN'T be everywhere and yeah. Okay maybe once in a while I'd like Taxon to take the priority but that's me being ridiculously over-invested and entrenched 24/7 (note to everone: do not turn into me XD ).

IDK, I just want the spark to be brighter and maybe the game to grow so that disproportionate impact thing is less.

... if we ever have another fourth wall event (or Ataraxion does), we need to have hiijinks. And give Glitch and / or Cain a nervous breakdown.

Well, sometimes people do need a bit of a reminder and, even with the best of intentions, real life gets to all of us. You've got a good point about our size. And we do love you. Don't ever doubt that.

Taxon is growing bit by bit, though we're probably attracting people who like the slowness and small size, so that may not exactly help with what's worrying you.

sassy horrors forever.

Yeah, that's the balance. I'm just trying to figure out where the line between "small" and "glorified musebox" is because like...sustainability.

On the other hand you're exactly right, there is growth and I've LOVED the new people we've picked up recently (seriously you guys are lovely and I'm thrilled to see you bringing in MORE folks ♥ ). Maybe we just need another IC meet-and-mingle type thing for bridging socializing gaps?

...that'll be Glitch's potluck dinner, then. Also I am all over the place as usual.

I'm planning on having a "buffy starts work at the bar" post put up once I get off my ass and do more with Haunted Holo stuffs.

So that could also be a meetup opportunity :)

This game is slower than the ones I've played on before but that isn't a bad thing. I have to curb my own internal worries about lack of response to my posts too, since, well, everyone has things they're doing and it can take some time to get to every place you should comment.

I don't even know where to start, so I guess I'll just write things as they come to me, and worry about structure later.

I've been seriously bummed out over this plot since the first few days of it. I think more so than the other mods as this particular plot was my wacky brain child since six or so months back, and I've been eager to work it into the game on a few occasions, but we ended pushing it back for among other things the sake of pacing.

So, when we finally got planning, I of course got excited and wanted everyone else to get as excited as I was, and I'm still not sure I succeeded in anything I set out to do. We plotted in the plotting post, as we always do, and then the plot started and...it never seemed to me to get going until the day before The End of it. The plot was supposed to run between March 1-8, one week, keep it nice and tight, but I don't know where it went off the rails.

Half the posts the first four days were made by either the mod account or characters played by mods. Almost half of the total posts between March 1-8 came on March 6 or 7.

I love rping with Dien and Keri, as my gushing comment of wub down below no doubt illustrates, but I keep saying it again and again: I want CR with every player. Not necessarily with all characters, as that could get a bit difficult to keep up with, but I seriously want CR from everyone.

I had this idea in my head that people would be tagging each other left and right and inserting their characters into other characters' nightmares to their hearts' content, but both during the plot and after the extension and now that it's over, I feel like it ended in one big whopping anticlimax.

I don't know if it's hindsight that's fooling me, but I have this mental image of the fairytale plot being super busy and fun and like I described above, everyone tagging each other left and right. I wanted the same vibe for this plot, just with a nastier edge. I don't feel it. I love the tags I got for my posts, I really enjoy the CR I've had so far during it, but I'm just not feeling it right now.

So what I'm asking for specifically, since as I said, the Haunted Holo thing was my idea originally, is what didn't work for you.

I'll admit that I'm new but when I was reading what was given, I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do. Let me clarify - I wasn't sure if everyone was supposed to grabbed or not and if not, were the people who weren't supposed to try to do something. It may just be that the plots here are more open ended than I'm used to at other place. If so, that's totally cool. I'm used to places where a lot of people who run plots have pretty tight structure to them - sometimes confiningly so but it has also gotten me used to making sure I'm hitting my marks, as it were.

Haha, we are the OPPOSITE of tightly-plotted around here. And yeah, that can be a big adjustment for players coming from games that are on the more organized end of the spectrum.

We definitely encourage a 'jump right in and get your feet wet' sort of mindset, you don't need to be 'grabbed' first although pre-planning with other people sometimes helps plots go smoother.

We'll try and be clearer on what people are 'supposed to do' in the future!

Again, a very new player, but I felt intimidated about barging in on posts where a couple of people were already tagging. I also personally found some of the narratives didn't leave me with an entirely clear idea of how Scott could get involved, but I've also been on heavy duty medication that leaves me a bit addled, so that was probably more me than them.

Likewise, Scott got Mick checking in but not much else on his post, so it felt like he was a bit outside. That was probably my fault for having his post be very non interactive.

this is completely unrelated to your post but that icon always makes me think scott is wearing a gas mask for some reason

As a mod I want to apologize for not tagging into as many people's posts, including yours, as I could have. I kept meaning to and meaning to, but somehow the time was never there :-\

Live and learn. 'Barging' in on posts is definitely accepted in Taxon unless someone specifically says they don't want it in their permissions post, and for my part at least I will try and do a better job tagging the posts of other (especially newish) chars, so that y'all feel part of things and not just there.

Heh.

It's something that I need to learn to do, I'm just fairly timid about posting on an active thread of combat doom or the like. It's me, and I wear that one.

And apology accepted. Have more not a gas mask.

I love the idea, really truly.

Currently I'm stuck -- my post is halted because I'm waiting for Glitch to respond. I suppose I could just assume at this point that we escape and can move on to actually defeating the thing.

Having it last a week in a comm that is historically slow seems to be an issue -- perhaps if it were to go the whole month?

My thoughts re: Haunted!Holo. Sorry for coming in late, I've been away this weekend!

I thought the idea was awesome. I loved it and I had a lot of fun, even though I'm still working on tags! I was excited for it to play out and all the stuff to go down and etc, etc.

The only thing I'd say is maybe it would have been better if it went on longer? I'm not gonna lie, I don't know anything about running a game or modding or how that works, so I'm sure there is an obvious counter-argument to this. I know there was the extension and that was much appreciated, especially cause there hadn't been that much action at that point. But I do feel like there needs to be enough time for things to play out, for people who may not be around a lot that week or two to jump in. Obviously slow tagging as usual helps! But I think having an alternate!Taxon, in this case, around a lot longer might make things in the game more complex and interesting. People trying to save others, people in real!Taxon trying to help/figure out WTF is going on, I don't know. So in conclusion, I think while in some cases it's good to keep certain glitches tight, that something like this might be a little longer, especially since Taxon tends to be slower than not.

ANYWAY, I do wish the glitch were more involved and epic, shall we say, because I thought the "anything goes" type of thing was totally cool and just so easy for characters to run into each other other than the usual "get-together" social type event, you know? Also FYI I should have done better with this as well, obviously, I'm not counting myself out!

I can see both benefits and drawbacks to it going for a month. We'll keep this in mind though, and think about it the next time we have a big glitch like this in the pipes-- thank you so much for your feedback!
